Story
Dirty Kumquats, founded in 2019 by MXLPCT, operates as Dirty Kumquats LLC from its base at 31 Bank Street Suite B, New York, NY 10014 [1], [2]. The company specializes in art created from photographs of unwashed, genderless kumquats, a concept that originated from a late-night conversation about words that sound like profanities [1], [16]. Dirty Kumquats has established a presence in both physical and digital art spaces, including an official NFT.NYC Artist Hub [5].
Dirty Kumquats emerged in 2019 from a conversation between founder MXLPCT and their fiancée, both natives of Brooklyn, NY [2]. The discussion centered around words that sound like profanities but are not, leading them to the term 'kumquat' [2]. The idea to transform this into an art concept, involving googly eyes on kumquats and staging them for photographs, developed shortly after securing the domain name [2]. This artistic approach built upon MXLPCT's prior years of experimenting with app filters to convert images into art [2].
The art from Dirty Kumquats is centered on real kumquats that are posed and photographed [1]. Each piece features an unwashed, genderless kumquat, intentionally arranged for a photograph, and subsequently discarded after its use in the artwork [1]. This process ensures the uniqueness of each creation [1]. The brand describes itself as an art brand built on photos of unwashed, genderless fruit [4].
Dirty Kumquats offers a diverse range of products featuring their distinctive artwork. Customers can purchase various items such as the "Dirty Nuts Kumquat Clock" for $47.95, the "Dirty Comedian Kumquat Tee" for $39.95, and the "Dirty Locked Kumquat Mug" for $19.95 [3]. The collection also includes wall art like the "Canvas of a Dirty Locked Kumquat" priced at $99.99, and apparel such as the "Champion Dirty Apple NY Hoodie" for $79.95 [3]. Other products include jigsaw puzzles, with the "Easter Kumquattery Jigsaw Puzzles" available for $29.99 [3]. Dirty Kumquats provides a wide array of merchandise to showcase its unique artistic style [3].
Dirty Kumquats maintains an active digital presence, including an official NFT.NYC Artist Hub [5]. The brand also engages with its audience on X (formerly Twitter), where it has 859 followers and describes itself as an art brand built on photos of unwashed genderless fruit [4]. The digital art pieces, known as 'Based Kumquattery,' are part of an eclectic collection where all pieces are created by staging and photographing real kumquats [1]. These digital pieces are available as open editions that can be minted on the BASE network through manifold.xyz or obtained by participating in 'Quat Games' on Farcaster [1]. This blend of physical art with digital accessibility and interactive elements highlights Dirty Kumquats' embrace of contemporary art distribution methods [1].
Dirty Kumquats distinguishes itself within the art and merchandise market through its unique subject matter and artistic process. While many brands focus on traditional art forms or digital-native creations, Dirty Kumquats centers its work on photographs of real, unwashed kumquats, each intentionally posed and discarded after being used for the artwork [1], [16]. This approach results in a blend of whimsical and thought-provoking imagery that translates into a variety of products, from apparel and mugs to wall art and jigsaw puzzles [3]. The brand's engagement with NFT platforms like the NFT.NYC Artist Hub and its "Quat Games" on Farcaster also positions it within the evolving landscape of digital art and collectibles [5], [18]. This combination of physical art with digital engagement, all stemming from a singular, unconventional artistic vision, sets Dirty Kumquats apart from more conventional art or lifestyle brands.
